Hard to Be a God - Wikipedia
Labeled as one of the biggest perfectionists among his peers, Russian film director Aleksei Yuryevich German is one of the most significant and influential figures in the history of the Soviet cinema of the late 20th century. Uncompromising and innovative throughout his career, German, in his philosophically rigorous works, kept testing the potentialities of film aesthetics to grapple with the conundrums of the collective psyche, vanishing memories, and ethical dilemmas and paradoxes of the totalitarian regime. Due not only to the multiple obstacles created by Soviet censorship, but also to his now legendary slow and laborious work methods, the Russian director created only five thematically and aesthetically distinctive films. Trudno byt bogom Hard to Be a God , can be regarded as his magnum opus. German first began thinking about an adaptation of the well-known science-fiction novel under the same title written by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky even prior to his directorial debut with Proverka na Dorogakh Trial on the Road , Soviet censors considered the project politically inappropriate.

Review: Hard to be a God
Hard to Be a God received universal acclaim from English-language and non Russian-language critics. The entirety of the film takes place on another planet, in the city of Arkanar, in a society that closely resembles the Middle Ages on Earth. History here has gone its own way: no Renaissance has occurred, the little glimpses of science and culture that exist are suppressed and killed off under the influence of a proto-fascist police state; dirt and dullness is everywhere.

The novel follows Anton, an undercover operative from the future planet Earth, in his mission on an alien planet that is populated by human beings whose society has not advanced beyond the Middle Ages. The novel's core idea is that human progress throughout the centuries is often cruel and bloody, and that religion and blind faith can be effective tools of oppression, working to destroy the emerging scientific disciplines and enlightenment. The title refers to Anton's known as his alias Don Rumata throughout the book perception of his precarious role as an observer on the planet, for while he has far more advanced knowledge than the people around him, he is forbidden to assist too actively as his assistance would interfere with the natural progress of history. The book pays a lot of attention to the internal world of the main character, showing his own evolution from an emotionally uninvolved 'observer' to the person who rejects the blind belief in theory when confronted with the cruelty of real events.
