Shoppers at these markets are given a taste of what one might find in the markets of the Far East, both literally and figuratively. The largest Asian supermarket chain in America that offers a full line of Asian foods as well as a broad range of Western groceries. The premier Filipino supermarket chain in North America, Seafood City is not just a supermarket but a "grocerant," blending the grocery and restaurant concepts.


I Went to 3 Asian supermarkets in OC. Here’s what I saw:




4th Street Market
Aisles at Assi Natural Market are being filled with groceries and other merchandise in preparation for the store's late March opening. It's not just the breadth of the selection that separates Assi from the typical Asian supermarket, manager Thomas Yoon said. It's the fusion concept of the store: groceries from cultures around the world — especially Asia — and natural and organic foods in an upscale environment. Branch manager Thomas Yoon points out the variety of coffees from around the world carried at the new Assi Natural Market in Irvine. Thomas Yoon swept one hand above neatly stacked family-size bags of rice and other grains that fill an entire aisle of Assi Natural Market. Assi is the latest addition to the growing ethnic grocery market in Orange County and throughout Southern California.

Because of this, some Asian grocery stores have lost non-Asian customers and been more empty than usual, while others are becoming more popular, as Asian families flock to stock up.
