Small lick observatory dome operation

By the end of World War II, after more than fifty years of operation, Lick Observatory still relied primarily on two 19th-century telescopes, the Great inch Refractor and the inch Crossely Reflector. These instruments had once been considered giants, but fifty years had seen them slip from dominance as the world's largest, to a modest position among the larger telescopes at other observatories that had sprung up in the first half of the 20th-century. Mount Wilson, miles to the south, had become the major force in astrophysics with its and inch reflectors. The inch reflector at Mount Palomar was nearing completion. Lick astronomers were finding it increasingly difficult to compete at the scientific forefront. It was clear that a large reflecting telescope was needed on Mount Hamilton to reinvigorate observational astronomy at the University of California.

Lick Observatory commemorates Apollo 11 experiment on 50th anniversary

Dedication of a plaque at Lick's Shane Telescope on August 1 honors the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment that measured the distance to the moon 50 years ago. By Tim Stephens. The first precise measurement of the distance from Earth to the moon was achieved on August 1, , in a landmark experiment involving Lick Observatory astronomers and the Apollo 11 astronauts. To commemorate this achievement on its 50th anniversary, a bronze plaque in the lobby of the Shane Telescope Dome at Lick Observatory will be dedicated on Thursday, August 1, as part of the IEEE Milestones Program , which honors significant technical achievements and innovations in electronics and computing. The event is by invitation only due to space limitations. Researchers used Lick's inch Shane Telescope to fire a powerful laser at the moon and detect the light that bounced back from a retro-reflector array placed on the lunar surface by the Apollo 11 astronauts.

It was the largest operating telescope of any type in the world from to and is housed inside a tower that is feet high and 90 feet in diameter on the west end of the building. The lenses, which together weigh about pounds, were cast in Paris, France by the optical glass manufacturer Mantois in the late s. It stands 65 feet in height from the base of the pier to the top of the German equatorial mounting, resting on a concrete and brick pedestal that is about 25 feet high. The estimated weight of the entire instrument is 82 tons.
